Prof. Diego Caprioglio, PhD

University of Eastern Piedmont

Diego Caprioglio, PhD, is a researcher and lecturer in Organic Chemistry at the University of Eastern Piedmont. He teaches Organic Chemistry, Chemistry of Biomolecules and laboratory-based chemistry across Biotechnology, Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Chemistry programmes. His research focuses on natural products, cannabinoids, curcuminoids and bioactive compounds, with applications in inflammatory, neurodegenerative and oncological diseases. He has authored numerous scientific publications and a patent in glioblastoma diagnostics.

Teaching Activities

Teaching Organic Chemistry, Preparatory Laboratory of Chemistry and Chemistry of Biomolecules within Biotechnology, Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Chemistry and Technology programmes at the University of Eastern Piedmont.

Teaching doctoral courses in Bioorganic Chemistry and the history and impact of biologically active molecules.

Research focused on natural substances, their chemical composition, biological activity and potential applications in medicine, agriculture and environmental science.

Organic synthesis and semi-synthesis of bioactive natural compounds, including cannabinoids, curcuminoids, triterpenoids and phenolic compounds.

Investigation of cannabinoids in inflammatory and neurodegenerative diseases and development of new anti-inflammatory, antitumour and imaging agents.

Isolation, purification and structural characterisation of natural products using NMR, LC-MS, IR and HPLC techniques.

Development of synthetic approaches involving organometallic reagents, microwave reactors and photochemical reactors.

Research Collaborations and Projects

Long-term collaborations with research groups at the University of Naples Federico II, the University of Córdoba, the National Research Council of Italy, the University of Jena and international biotechnology companies.

Participation in the European TriForC project and the PRIN project dedicated to the exploration of the phytocannabinoid chemical space.

Co-Principal Investigator of a University of Eastern Piedmont project concerning the development of a biosensor for collagen degradation.
