Academic and Teaching Activities

Teaching Human Anatomy to students enrolled in Medicine and Surgery, the International Medical School, Nursing and Physiotherapy programmes at the University of Milan.

Tutoring practical activities using anatomical models and cadaver dissection in the anatomical hall.

Previous teaching activities for degree programmes in Occupational Therapy, Neurophysiopathology, Cardiocirculatory Physiopathology and Perfusion Techniques, Environmental and Workplace Prevention Techniques, and Health Assistance.

Teaching the elective course in History of Anatomy for Medicine and Surgery students.

Member of the teaching boards of postgraduate programmes in Bioarchaeology, Paleopathology, Forensic Anthropology, Skeletal Anthropology, Paleopathology and Forensic Odontology.

Tutor and lecturer within the Summer School in Osteology and Anthropology.

Forensic and Clinical Activities

Medical examiner in the anatomical hall since 2007, with experience in more than 200 autopsies.

Former expert witness in forensic pathology and anthropology, including judicial autopsies, crime-scene investigation, identification of human remains and living individuals, and forensic age estimation.

Former member of the service for victims of sexual abuse and maltreatment at Clinica Mangiagalli in Milan.

Research Activities

Research focused on three-dimensional imaging techniques, including stereophotogrammetry, laser scanning and segmentation of CT and MRI images.

Development and validation of novel three-dimensional systems for facial anatomy, clinical assessment and anatomical documentation.

Study of facial morphology and facial expression in healthy subjects and patients affected by genetic, acquired and neuromuscular diseases.

Research into cranial and dental anatomical variation, with applications in otolaryngology, dentistry, maxillofacial surgery, reconstructive surgery, neurology and anthropology.

Analysis of skeletal morphology according to sex, age and ancestry, as well as anatomical individuality and variability.

Research in osteology, forensic anthropology, paleopathology, history of medicine, anatomy and anatomical dissection.

Research Projects

Principal Investigator of the funded PRIN project FRANTIC – Frequency of Anatomical Traits for Personal Identification.

Participation in research projects concerning three-dimensional facial analysis, neuromuscular diseases, cadaver donation, archaeological human remains and forensic identification.

Former coordinator of the PANDORA body donation programme at the University of Milan.

Editorial and Professional Activities

Member of the Advisory Board of the International Journal of Legal Medicine.

Editorial Board Member of Current Medical Imaging and the Stomatology Edu Journal.

Member of the Italian Anthropological Association, the Italian Society of Anatomy and Histology and the Study Group on Forensic Age Diagnostics.

Former member of the American Association for Anatomy and the European project on craniofacial superimposition for forensic identification.

Member of the Functional Anatomy Laboratory of the Stomatognathic System and former member of the Laboratory of Forensic Anthropology and Odontology.
